The New Palmyra Epigraphic Objects (NPEO) Project is Born
AI × inscription photography — open epigraphic results for Palmyra, built on field documentation and community reference photos.
24 April 2026
NEWPALMYRA announced the New Palmyra Epigraphic Objects (NPEO) project — combining AI with photographs of Palmyrene inscriptions to produce open epigraphic results.
NPEO is #ai × (photos of inscriptions) = results.
The work draws on three pillars:
- 🏛 Palmyra images from @basselkhartabil — unreleased field photography from Bassel Khartabil's documentation of the site since 2005
- 📜 1,134 inscriptions released in March 2026 — a published corpus for transcription, translation, and linked open data
- 📸 NEWPALMYRA's 3,000+ Flickr community archive — decades of reference photos from tourists, researchers, and contributors
